With the first few inches of snoShoveling snoww, residents in areas where snow is common are ready to break out their shovels.  This involves bending, twisting, and lifting, all of which can lead to serious back injury.

Shoveling is one of the main causes of back injuries during the winter months.  With these few tips, you can prevent potential injuries and make your snow removal process as painless as possible.

  • Invest in an ergonomic shovel. A shovel that has a lightweight blade, curved handle, and is adjustable can make shoveling a lot easier.
  • Use proper lifting techniques. Shovel in small amounts.  Lift using your leg muscles instead of lifting with your back.  Try not to lift loads that are too heavy for you and avoid tossing the snow over your head. If lifting is too strenuous for you, try pushing the snow instead.
  • Invest in a snow blower. Using a snow blower takes off all the stress of shoveling.
  • Pace yourself. If you find yourself short of breath, sweating profusely, or experiencing chest pain, take a break and return to the task later.
  • Wear proper clothing. Dress accordingly and wear slip-resistant snow boots to avoid slipping and falling on your back.
